LÆFAN / Alerts & response

Environmental response

Know when conditions change. Understand what happened next.

LÆFAN brings environmental excursions, readings, checks and staff responses together, giving you a clear record of what changed and how it was handled.

Environmental excursions

When conditions move outside the expected range.

Environmental conditions naturally change over time. When a reading moves outside the range set in an Environmental Profile, LÆFAN highlights it so you can understand what happened and decide whether anything needs attention.

ENV

Environmental excursion

Conditions have moved outside the range set for this collection or space.

For example, relative humidity in a gallery or display case may move outside the range recorded in its Environmental Profile. LÆFAN keeps the excursion together with the surrounding readings and context, making it easier to understand what changed and when.

  • Where the change happened
  • Which condition changed
  • The readings before, during and after
  • How far conditions moved and for how long
  • Who reviewed it and what happened next
DATA

Sensor flow

Know when expected readings stop arriving.

LÆFAN also keeps an eye on sensor flow and data continuity. If readings are unexpectedly delayed or stop arriving, that is shown separately from an environmental excursion.

  • A sensor or data source stops reporting
  • Readings arrive later than expected
  • An unexpected gap appears in the history
Confidence in the evidenceThis makes it easy to tell the difference between a genuine change in collection conditions and a gap in incoming data, without giving sensor flow equal weight to the environmental story.

Illustrative excursion

From first excursion to retained response.

This example uses an organisation-selected profile to show the workflow. The values are illustrative, not universal conservation limits.

A reading moves outside the selected profile.

LÆFAN has enough context to know that this reading belongs to the Roman Gallery and should be interpreted against the Environmental Profile assigned there.

Acknowledgement is only the start

Keep each stage of the response clear.

Acknowledging an excursion records that somebody has seen and reviewed it. It does not mean conditions have returned to the expected range or that any follow-up is finished.

1AcknowledgeRecord who has seen it and when.
2InvestigateAdd observations, likely cause and any supporting Spot Record.
3RespondRecord practical action taken without rewriting the original reading.
4RecoverShow when conditions returned to the selected profile, where data supports that.
5RetainKeep the event and response available for later reporting and review.

Response in context

Keep the excursion connected to the rest of the environmental story.

The useful record is not just the alert itself. It is the collection context, the checks made at the time and the response that followed.

Profile

Why was this an excursion?

The Environmental Profile supplies the selected expected conditions. The alert does not invent another threshold.

About Environmental Profiles →
Monitoring plan

Was the agreed check carried out?

A scheduled monitoring check can show that staff reviewed conditions, completed manual observations and followed up unresolved excursions.

Explore Monitoring Plans →
Spot record

What did staff observe on site?

A manual reading or observation can add evidence at the time of investigation without replacing the continuous sensor history.

Monitoring evidence →
Campaign

Was this part of a loan or exhibition?

A Campaign can provide the temporary context around an excursion while the underlying environmental history remains intact.

Keep the evidence chain intact

What happened after an excursion belongs with the environmental history that led to it.

That means later reports can show not only that conditions moved outside expectations, but also who reviewed the event, what was found, what was done and whether conditions recovered.

Conservation judgement remains with the organisation.

LÆFAN helps apply, monitor and evidence the Environmental Profiles your organisation chooses. It does not decide universal collection-care limits or replace professional conservation judgement.
